Investigation and Trial
The Alcolu police interrogated Stinney and his brother. They ultimately released Stinney’s older brother and focused on the young fourteen-year-old boy. The police questioned him until they supposedly obtained a confession from him. This was 1944 before the right to legal representation was in force. So, George, a young boy was questioned alone till he eventually confessed. There is no evidence of Stinney’s written confession. However, police stated that Stinney had confessed to killing the girls because he had wanted to engage in sexual intercourse with Betty.
After the confession, the trial date was set for shortly after. The trial preparation took one day, showing the speed by which the authorities wanted to secure Stinney’s conviction. The trial was only two hours long and the jury deliberated for ten minutes only. They found the young boy guilty of the double murders. He was sentenced to death by electrocution.
