The victims of the murder, Betty Binnicker and Mary Thames
The bodies of Betty Binnicker, aged 11, and Mary Thames, aged 7 were found dead in a ditch on 24 March 1944. The girls had been reported missing when they did not return home in Alcolu, South Carolina. They had last been seen riding their bicycles in search of flowers when they seemed to have disappeared.
Upon examination by the coroner, a report was produced stating that the two girls had suffered blunt force trauma which had resulted in their death. Their skulls were punctured by a blunt instrument. It was also noted that Betty had bruising on her genitals although there was no further evidence of a sexual assault.
The discovery of the dead bodies sent shockwaves across the small town. Police were under pressure to find out who had committed the double murders. Stinney was the chosen suspect because the two girls had passed through the Stinney household and asked Stinney and his little sister where to find passionflowers.
