The First World War gave rise to some of the most brutal war tactic ever used throughout human history. Of these one of the most significant must be the use of chlorine gas to combat the stagnation of combat created by trench warfare. This noxious gas would be released when the wind blew towards the enemy trench allowing the deadly mist to creep over to the opposing trench. Once in the enemy trench, the gas would wreak havoc among those exposed to it.
Without a gas mask, the gas would slowly fill up a soldier’s lungs reacting with the water present creating hydrochloric acid which would quickly erode the lung tissue. What followed was a slow and painful death as the soldiers drowned in acid. This brutal weapon of war was used to clear positions such as trenches so that the advancing army would face minimal resistance. In once such occasion on the eastern front the gas wouldn’t be strong enough to overpower the enemy.
