The grim tale of a soap maker turned serial killer
The quiet streets of Correggio, an Italian town located in the Emilia-Romagna region, was once the horrifying playground of a notorious serial killer who committed unspeakable acts.
In the midst of World War II, the town bore witness to sinister events that were truly beyond comprehension. This is the tale of Leonarda Cianciulli, known as the 'Soap-Maker of Correggio', a gentle-looking woman who shocked all of Italy with her heinous crimes of murder and macabre repurposing of human bodies.
Daughter of a superstitious and tormentous mother, Cianciulli grew up amidst hardship, attempted suicides and a deep-rooted belief in the supernatural.
Combining a love for superstition, a desperate need for protective rituals and a fear born out of predictions by a fortune teller, Cianciulli discarded her facade as a friendly neighbour and soap maker to descend into the world of crime, and ultimately, serial killing.
