Leonarda Cianciulli - the 'Soap-Maker of Correggio'
This is the tale of Leonarda Cianciulli, known as the 'Soap-Maker of Correggio', a gentle-looking woman who shocked all of Italy with her heinous crimes of murder and macabre repurposing of human bodies

Mental illness: A factor or an excuse?

The testimony of the Soap Maker of Correggio revealed the intricate workings of a psychologically disturbed mind.

Cianciulli's counsellors argued that she suffered from severe personality disorders, psychosis and was a victim of her traumatic upbringing.

They contended that her macabre rituals were a direct result of these mental disorders combined with superstitious beliefs, pointing to an extreme case of mental illness.

This defence, however, was not accepted by the court. While she was undoubtedly psychologically disturbed, the premeditated nature of her crimes, combined with her calculated efforts to cover them up, proved that she was entirely aware of her actions and their implications, hence, culpable for her deeds.

The concluding chapter: Sentence to life imprisonment

In 1946, Leonarda Cianciulli, the Soap-Maker of Correggio, was found guilty of her heinous crimes. The court sentenced her to thirty years in prison and three years in a criminal asylum.

Cianciulli served a mere twenty years behind bars, her life ending within the confines of the asylum in 1970.

Her story, eerie and gruesome, remains a chilling reminder of the depths to which the human mind can descend when gripped by dread and superstition.

Today, tucked away in the crime museum in Rome, the macabre tools of the Correggio's murderer, the pot in which she boiled human remains and her homemade soap, bear witness to this sordid chapter in Italy's history.
